  • Explanation : Let f (x) = x3 + ax2 + bx + 16
    Since, (x - 2) is a factor of f (x)
    ∴ f (2) = 0
    i.e. 8 + 4a + 2b + 16 = 0
    ⇒ 8 + 4a + 8a + 16 = 0 [as b = 4a]
    ∴ a = -2
    and b = 4a-8
    ⇒ b=4(-2)=-8
    ⇒ a = -2, b = -8.
