31. Given below are two statements - one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason(R):
Assertion (A): No social activity is possible without communication.
Reason (R): Communication plays vital role in our daily life.
In the light of the above statements choose the correct option :

  • Option : A
  • Explanation :
Communication plays a vital role in human life. It enables the exchange of thoughts and ideas without which social activity is not possible. Animals too communicate in a very basic manner with sounds and movements. Man is differentiated as a social animal because human communication through language majorly enables social interaction. So, both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

32. "Fire is cold, because it is a substance" - is an instance of which one of the hetvabhas (fallacy of inference)

  • Option : B
  • Explanation :
In Anumana (inference), fallacies (hetvabhasa) may occur due to the following: (i) Asiddha: when hetu (ground) is unproved). (ii) Savyabhicara: When hetu is irregular. (iii) Satpratipaksa: Here the hetu is contradicted by another hetu. If both have equal force, then nothing follows. 'Sound is eternal, because it is audible', and 'Sound is noneternal, because it is produced'. Here 'audible' is counterbalanced by 'produced' and both are of equal force. (iv) Badhita: When another proof (as by perception) definitely contradicts and disproves the middle term (hetu). 'Fire is cold because it is a substance'. (v) Viruddha: Instead of proving something it is proving the opposite. 'Sound is eternal because it is produced'.

33. Three taps A, B and C can fill a tank in 8, 10 and 12 hours respectively. The tap A is open all the time continuously. But taps B and C are open for one hour each alternately. How long will it take the tank to be full?

  • Option : B
  • Explanation :
Part of the tank filled in first hour by tap
    A and B = 1/8 + 1/10 = 9/40 tank
Part of the tank filled in second hour by tap
    A and C = 1/8 + 1/12 = 5/24
Part of the tank filled in 2 hours
    9/40 + 5/24 = 26/60 tank
Part of the tank remains empty after 4 hours
    1 - [8 x (26/60)] = 2/15 tank
Time required to fill 2/15 tank by tap A and B
    2/15 x 40/9 = 16/27 hour Hence, total time taken = 4 + (16/27) = 4(16/27)hours
