An ex post facto research design is a method in which groups with qualities that already exist are compared on some dependent variable. Both these are quantitative research formats that work to test a pre formulated hypothesis and use the data and results to generalize, i.e., extend them to a wider or universal set to draw broad inferences. Phenomenology, narrative research and case study are qualitative research formats aiming to provide a rich, contextualized understanding of some aspect of human experience through the intensive study of particular cases. They test their hypotheses but do not generalise their results. Action research uses both qualitative and quantitative methods for a self-reflective enquiry aimed at understaoding and improving existing practices. This doesn't generalise its results, either.
