Explanation : The University Grants Commission (UGC)
of India is a statutory organisation set up by
the Union government in 1956, charged with
coordination, determination and maintenance
of standards of university education. It
provides recognition to universities in India,
and disburses funds to such recognized
universities and colleges. Its other prime
functions are serving as a vital link between -
the Union and state governments and
institutions of higher learning and advising
the Central and State governments on the
measures necessary for improvement of
university education.
Explanation : Ground water is an essential and vital
component of our life support system. The
ground water resources are being utilized for
drinking, irrigation and industrial purposes.
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element
found in ground water. In India, seven
states namely- West Bengal, Jharkhand,
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh in the flood plain of the
Ganga River;Assam and Manipur in the flood
plain of the Brahmaputra and Imphal rivers
and Rajnandgaon village in Chhattisgarh
state have so far been reported affected by
Arsenic contamination in groundwater above
the permissible limit of 10 ug/L. People in
these affected states have chronically been
exposed to drinking Arsenic contaminated
hand tube-wells water.
Explanation : To redress the decline in research environment
in Indian Universities and stagnation of
faculty and infrastructure, the Government
of India, through the University Grants a
Commission, has decided to launch a new
Programme called "UGC-Faculty Recharge
Programme." The intent of the government is
to ultimately induct up to 1000 faculty during
the next five years with a yearly repeat cycle.

by academic institutions/boards/eligibility
assessment bodies. NAD not only ensures
easy access to and retrieval of an academic
award but also validates and guarantees its
authenticity and safe storage.
Explanation : The Scheme for Promotion of Academic
and Research Collaboration (SPARC) is a
Ministry of Human Resource Development
initiative. It aims at improving the research
ecosystem of India's higher educational
institutions by facilitating academic and
research collaborations between Indian
institutions and the best institutions in the
world from 28 selected nations to jointly
solve problems of national and international
relevance. Indian Institute of Technology
Kharagpur is the National Coordinating
Institute to implement the SPARC programme.
