paper/thesis placed before the main document
to serve multiple purposes:
• Gives readers the gist or essence of the
paper! article (with all the major elements
of the work in a highly condensed form)
which generates interest to read the full
paper;
• Prepares readers to follow the detailed
information, analyses, and arguments in
the full paper;
• Helps readers remember key points from
the paper.
An abstract is a regular feature in a
research article/paper (6-7 sentences,
150-250 words long) and a thesis/
dissertation (1-2 pages long).
