Explanation : The National Policy on Education (NPE)
1986 was adopted by Parliament in May
1986. A committee was set up under the
chairmanship of Acharya Ramamurti in
May 1990 to review NPE and to make
recommendations for its modifications.
NPE, 1986 suggested that education needed
to be managed in an atmosphere of utmost
intellectual rigour, seriousness of purpose
and, at the same time, offteedom essential
for innovation and creativity. The Policy
also envisaged that discipline be introduced
into the system with immediate effec!. The
policy put it in simple words that for the
system to work all teachers should teach
and all students should study.
