- Explanation : Categorical propositions can be of four
standard forms: A, E, I or O. A Syllogism
is made up of any three of these. Once a
syllogism is in standard form, its mood
and figure can be determined. The mood
and figure uniquely describe the form of
the syllogism. Any syllogism of this form
will have the same degree of validity or
invalidity.
Mood is a list of the three types of
propositions making up the syllogism
beginning with the major premise and
ending with the conclusion.
Figure depends on the arrangement of the
middle term in the two premises. There can
be four possible figures, easily remembered
by the flying brick shown below.
