What is the GATE Computer Science?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering  is a national examination standard in India for new engineers and science students who want to chase higher studies in engineering or science after their graduation. The exam is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE.

GATE Computer Science is a stream that focuses on the basics of Computer Programming and Communications. It also includes engineering subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics & Graph Theory, Design & Analysis Algorithms, Programming & Data Structure, Digital Logic, and Computer Organization, Theory of Computation, and Compiler design, Operating Systems, DBMS, Computer Networks and General Aptitude.


Can Computer Science students give GATE exams?

Yes, GATE is open for computer science. Students who have done a Bachelor of Technology or a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology or Computer Science and Engineering can take the GATE Computer Science Exam. To the limited extent, the candidate must have at least one year of engineering studies to pass this exam.

Exam Pattern for GATE Computer Science

  •  GATE Computer Science  Exam duration is  three hours. Below mentioned are the main pointers of the exam.

    Following are the topics that one needs to prepare for the Computer Science Paper:

    • The Total Questions in the paper would be 65
    • The questions include both MCQs and Numerical Answer type Questions
    • The General Aptitude questions are standard in all the papers

The following students are eligible to take GATE exam:

Academic Qualification:

  • Candidates must have passed graduation in engineering/technology / Architecture (4 years after 10+2/ Post-B.Sc./ Post-Diploma) or Master’s degree in any relevant science subject.
  • Candidates who obtain certification from any of the professional societies must ensure that those examinations conducted by the societies are approved by MHRD/AICTE/UGC/UPSC as equivalent to B.E. /B. Tech. /B.Arch./ B. Planning etc.

Age Limit:
There is no age limit

Marking Scheme

  • MCQs– One thirds mark will be deducted for every wrong response. One mark for each correct answer
  • MCQs– Two thirds mark will be deducted for every wrong answer. 2 marks for each correct answer.
  • No marks will be awarded for unanswered questions

Note: No negative marking will be done for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

Is the GATE good for the CSE?

How difficult is Gate Computer Science?

  • 45 Questions to be asked from Core Syllabus. 

Total Marks and Time Duration:

  • The paper will be of 100 marks and the total number of questions will be 65.
  • GATE CS is a 3-hour long computer-based paper.
  • The language of the paper is English.

Marking Criteria

  • MCQs - 1 Marks – For each right answer; 1/3 marks will be deducted each wrong answer. 
  • MCQs - 2 Marks – For each right answer; 2/3 marks will be deducted for each of the wrong answers.
  • NAT – There are no negative checking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. 
  • MSQ – There is no negative marking for a wrong answer in MSQ questions.

Total Number of Sections: 

  • General aptitude
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • The subject selected by the candidates

General Aptitude carrying 15% of the total marks, Engineering Mathematics carrying 13% of the total marks, and Subject Questions carrying 72% of the total marks.
